Values

At Little Cranes Pre-School we adopt the Values-based education of the main Academy. This means that throughout our day we notice, praise, articulate and model the values we expect and enjoy the positive impact this has on our Little Cranes life-skills, behaviour choices and school-readiness. The ethos of this education supports and encourages us all to celebrate success, promote high self-esteem and support reflection. This is successful because our whole Pre-School team are committed to weaving the principles into their school day.

British Values

In November of 2014, the Department for Education (DfE) reinforced the need to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the “fundamental British values” of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty & freedom of speech,  mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. It is certainly very difficult to imagine how an early years setting may explain and explore these values, however in doing so as is appropriate to the age and stage of our children, we are confident in our capacity, as part of our ‘Values education’, to offer a genuine commitment towards developing an age-appropriate understanding of what the DfE has defined as ‘British values’ in Little Cranes Pre-School.

  • We introduce the concept of democracy by giving children opportunities to make decisions together. We respect when these decisions may be different to those we would have chosen.
  • We introduce the concept of the rule of law by ensuring children understand the Pre-School Golden Rules. We encourage children to notice and celebrate those good behaviours being demonstrated and feel proud of themselves for displaying these behaviours also. In discussing misbehaviour in a productive, values-based manner, we similarly strive to support children in understanding how their behaviour may affect others.
  • We introduce the concept of individual liberty by allowing children to express themselves in how and where they choose to learn and play. We equip them with the confidence to try new things and celebrate their individual preferences and strengths.
  • We introduce mutual respect and tolerance by helping children to find out more about other cultures - a strength of our international Pre-School.
